Why Lithium batteries?
Lithium batteries are very popular. The LiFePO4 variety offers many advantages over the LiCoO2 and traditional lead acid battery.

Types of lithium batteries
There are two types of lithium batteries: the lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) and the lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO4 or LFP). The former is the most widely used variant. LiFePO4 was discovered by John Goodenough’s research group in 1996 as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries and offers distinct advantages. For example, LiFePO4 cells are significantly safer than LiCoO2 cells because they charge quickly without overheating.

Advantages LFP batteries
Long lifetime
Lithium iron phosphate batteries have a long service life. It ranges from 2000 to 5000 cycles and can be extended slightly by partial rather than full charging. Research shows that this type of battery has more than 75% of its capacity after 2000 cycles. By comparison, a lead-acid battery fails after only 300 to 500 cycles. The LPF is considerably more expensive to purchase, but the purchase will pay for itself due to its longer life.

Rapid charging
An LFP battery can be charged quickly and efficiently due to its low internal resistance. Unlike a lead-acid battery, all the current goes in easily and there is virtually no loss.

Safe and maintenance-free
LiFePO4 batteries have a closed structure and are therefore maintenance free. They can also withstand mechanical shocks and release and absorb high currents quite well. In addition, LiFePO4 is a non-toxic, non-flammable material that does not emit hazardous fumes.

Problem-free interim charging
If lead-acid batteries are stored for long periods of time while only partially charged or fully discharged, sulfation will occur. This will eventually make them unusable. LFP batteries do not need to be fully charged. In fact, their life span improves somewhat when they are only partially charged.

Light and compact
LFP batteries are up to 70% lighter than lead acid batteries. They also take up to 70% less space. This is handy on board where space is often limited.

Important to know: connecting our Lithium batteries in series is not allowed. However, you can configure them in parallel. Furthermore, they should always be placed in an upright position so that the electrolyte takes up as much surface area of the cells as possible.
